I first came to Alaska in March, 1998. It was the best year for the aurora in 25 years and Ice Alaska and the North American Mushing Relays were all happening that week. The incredible hospitality of the Alaskans I met felt like I had returned home. From that moment, I knew Alaska would be home one day. It took 14 years, but in the interim, I was lucky enough to travel to Alaska annually to install hardware and software and train system administrators at JBER, Ft. Wainwright and Eielson AFB. Each time I came back, I spent a few extra days exploring more of Alaska - hiking, touring Denali, halibut fishing in Homer, salmon fishing in Resurrection Bay, and soaking in Chena Hot Springs. In 2012 I finally was hired as a contractor at JBER and here I am!</p><p>I worked as a pharmacy technician for the Veterans Administration and in several private hospitals. I was a technician member of the California Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists (CSHP) and other professional pharmacy organizations. CSHP technicians gave testimony before the State Board of Pharmacy and worked with the legislature to mandate certification for pharmacy technicians in California and nationally. I was also elected as a delegate and chair of the Technician Division, and in 1997, I was selected as Pharmacy Technician of the Year.</p><p>In 1995, I was recruited by a high tech research and development company to test the software used in military hospitals and clinics, and eventually installed hardware and software, wrote technical documentation, and provided systems administration support and training at military hospitals, spending four years at Aviano Air Force Base in Italy. While there, I experienced some health issues, and spent 44 days in an Italian hospital, where I saw how national healthcare works.</p><p>In addition to pharmacy organizations, I have served on the boards of several organizations, among them are the San Diego Crime Victims Fund, the Outdoor Heritage Foundation, the Italian English Speaking Intergroup, MatSu United for Progress and Big Cabbage Radio. </p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p></p>

<p>Cook Inlet gas is rapidly being used up, but is there any plan for what to do when the wells are dry? We all know how cold the winters are here, burning wood might keep us warm, but there are only so many forests to cut down....and I suspect none of us want to see the beauty surrounding us to be cut down so we do not freeze! We need to find other sources of energy to heat our homes, Scandinavia has similar weather to Alaska. Maybe we should ask them how they stay warm at -26F (-32C)! I think they know how. If this means subsidies for heat pumps, let's find a way to make that happen without bankrupting the state.</p>

<p>Energy is something we need to address soon because Cook Inlet gas is fast disappearing. We need to think outside the box. Countries like Finland, Norway and Sweden have weather like we do. And they use heat pumps. But here in Alaska we are told they don't work in Arctic climates. Well, which is it? Scandinavians don't run out of energy. Maybe we need to ask them for advice and think about implementing their plans here?</p>

<h2>ENERGY RESOURCES</h2>

<p>No Alaskan should have to live in a car, a tent or a lean-to. There is enough room in Alaska for everyone to have a home. Rents are out of control, and housing costs are sky high. I believe that if vacation rentals are driving rents up, then there should be limits on how many units can be converted from housing for residents versus vacation rentals. Kids can't learn if they don't have food in their bellies. And adults can't focus on their jobs if they are hungry.  A living wage is just common sense, and our schools can find grants to provide lunch for those in need. </p>

<p>Everyone deserves a roof over their head and food in their belly. When units are bought for vacation rentals, and locals have no place to live, then I believe we have a problem. When people have to apply for food assistance or work multiple jobs to feed their family, then there is a problem.</p>

<h2>FOOD AND HOUSING FOR EVERY ALASKAN</h2>

<p>Private equity needs to be legislated out of healthcare. Healthcare is NOT a business, nor a privilege, it is a right that everyone deserves. No one should be a car accident or a fall or a cancer diagnosis away from bankruptcy. Insurance companies need to have qualified people making decisions about our health. A dermatologist never performed orthopedic surgery - why should he or she make a decision about whether you need a knee replacement? AI is only as good as the person designing the end product, and if that person does not have a healthcare degree, they are not qualified to make a decision about your healthcare and your need for treatment. The insurance industry needs to be regulated - by healthcare professionals.</p>

<p><strong>Healthcare is a right — </strong>not a privilege for the few. I spoke to someone the other day who has a good job. And she still must pay $24,000 a year between insurance premiums and deductibles. That is insane!  Many people do not make that much in a year!! Healthcare needs to be affordable, and not tied to employment. Every family deserves to afford prenatal care, to know they can go to a birthing center or hospital to welcome a new family member and not go bankrupt if something goes wrong.</p>

<h2>ACCESS TO HEALTHCARE FOR ALL</h2>

<p>All children deserve a decent education. Whether you want to homeschool your kids or send them to public or private schools, the end result should be that they are able to read and write, know basic math skills, understand the history of our country,  and maybe even speak another language! Every child should have food in their tummy so they can concentrate on school, not when they will eat next.</p>

<p>Alaska's education needs an overhaul. Can we agree on that? Schools are being closed, children ride for hours just to get to and from school, teachers have to pay for their own materials, art and music are not even optional anymore, and educators are not given the option for a decent retirement. We need to find the money to fund all of this. We can stop giving money away to the oil and gas companies and let them pay their fair share.</p>
